When a Chicago woman stopped by McDonald’s to grab a bite to eat after work, she had no idea what she was about to witness. She caught a cashier in the back corner with a disabled elderly man, who probably thought nobody was looking, but she saw it all and acted immediately.
Destiny Carreno was waiting her turn in line to order her food when the unnamed elderly man, who struggled with a disability, came up to the counter and asked the cashier an unexpected question. The employee paused briefly, confused by what the man was requesting, then suddenly shut down his station and went to the corner where the older gentleman had gone back to sit down.
Destiny watched for a moment, confused by what the cashier was doing, leaving his station in the middle of rush hour in downtown Chicago. She said in a Facebook post on the incident that she had heard the man politely say to the employee at the counter, “Help me please,” but she couldn’t immediately tell what he needed help with. Then, she witnessed what the worker did, and it took her completely by surprise.
The handicapped man, who was at the restaurant by himself, simply needed help cutting and eating his food. Destiny described in her post what happened next, and it had her quickly taking a picture of the moment with tears in her eyes.
“To be honest, I thought the cashier wasn’t going to help, especially during rush hour in downtown Chicago, but to my shock, he shut down his register and disappeared from view….” she began. But then, she didn’t expect what she was about to see when the cashier came out into the dining area. “The cashier came out from the kitchen, sat down, and began cutting the man’s meal and helped him eat.”
The worker didn’t mind that he was on the clock and people would have to wait a little longer in his co-worker’s line to order their meals. He came to this customer’s aid, taking the time to cut perfect pieces for this man and feed him each one. The gesture was moving to Destiny, who said she couldn’t control her emotions in front of a room full of strangers.
“At that point, the tears started to gather in my eyes. My heart was so appreciative for what he did,” she said in her post alongside the picture she took of this incredibly sweet good deed. “I couldn’t contain my emotions in the crowded restaurant.”
Since putting her picture and description of what happened the evening of September 16 on Facebook, hundreds of thousands of people were also just as touched as she was, sharing her post more than 297,000 times.
“This employee, who put everything on hold for this man, went above and beyond his responsibilities to help this handicapped customer out,” she wrote. “That was the kindest and most humble thing I had ever seen.”
This employee is a credit to his profession and a contrast to others his age in an entitled generation of people. To feed another person is one of the most humbling and caring gestures one can do. This man was a stranger, but he was struggling, and this incredible employee wasn’t going to let that happen. Thank you to this employee’s parents for raising their son right.
